Across Europe, the far right is making the same promise increasingly central to its electoral campaigns: stop helping Ukraine, and we will keep you out of the war. The argument is seductive in its simplicity.

When my daughter was two, whenever a ball came flying towards her, she would close her eyes. She seemed to believe that if she couldn’t see the ball, it couldn’t hit her.

It hit her.

By three, she had understood that closing her eyes did not change the trajectory of the ball. So she started watching it. When it came towards her, she would run away and hope it landed somewhere else.

Now she is four. She watches the ball coming, moves towards it and tries to catch it.

This is, roughly, the intellectual journey Europe still needs to make. A war does not disappear because you refuse to look at it. A threat does not change direction because you withdraw from confronting it. And running from the place where you think the ball will land is not a strategy when the person throwing it can simply aim again.

The extraordinary thing is that, after four and a half years of watching Ukrainians catching the ball, some European politicians are campaigning on the promise that the safest thing to do now is to close their eyes.

My daughter grew out of that strategy at two.
