Over past months, MFW have posted a number of tweets with the tagline “Are Men Okay?”

We’ve done this for a reason. Because while in general we live by the belief that women don’t owe men shit, we do appreciate our many great male supporters and aren’t about alienating decent blokes for kicks.

The entire reason we say “Are Men Okay?” is to highlight that men (at least, straight white men) are thoroughly unused to having their entire cohort repeatedly reduced to one negative opinion or belief.

Yet this is what happens to women (and almost all in minority groups) from the time they’re toddlers.

Think about it.

From the time they’re tiny, little girls are subjected to other people’s opinions on what females are required to be:

“Don’t throw like a girl”

“Aaargh, girl germs”

“Dresses are for sissies”

“Act like a little lady”

“Girls don’t climb trees”

“Pull your skirt down, don’t show your knickers”

And when they get bigger, teenage girls and women get even worse:

“You can’t wear that short skirt (or tight dress, see-through top, spaghetti straps or low-cut shirt) because it’s too revealing”

“Ladies don’t swear”

“Ladies don’t yell”

“Ladies don’t sweat”

“Ladies don’t drink beer”

“Bloody women!”

“The old ball and chain”

“Gold-diggers”

“Tarts”

“Sluts”

And that’s just a few examples from thousands of words and phrases spoken negatively about women every single fucking day.

This doesn’t go on just in women’s actual presence, either. Almost every film and TV show you watch (in 2023) has men who are heroes and women whose main role is to be rescued by them. Most books are written by men and feature male acts of bravery and redemption. Almost all media is owned and managed by men. So content is skewed towards male interests and male superiority. Men vastly dominate social media and control most of the content (partly by demonising and silencing women). Over 95% of global sports funding goes to men. Even children’s content is heavily skewed towards male achievement and female adoration of it.

What’s more, it’s impossible to change how men and women are differently portrayed because most men refuse to consume content skewed towards “women’s interests”. This means most women (who generally identify as human first and female second) are interested in content which features men, but most men (who identify as male first and human second) don’t do so in reverse.

This impacts where funding and promotion goes, and what content gets the most attention (hint: it’s what men want).

You might be thinking men are regularly defined according to gender, too. Yes, they are. But those tropes occur less frequently than they do for women, and are (in general) less demeaning and damaging. In fact, many of the generalised ways men are discussed are positive, not negative.

So what we’re doing with the “Are Men Okay?” question is merely to shine a light on how annoying and harmful it is to be lumped into one discrete and demonised group when you don’t want to be.

If the “Are Men Okay?” question makes men uncomfortable: it’s MEANT to.

Because it’s meant to help men understand how it feels to be portrayed negatively as a gender, day after relentless fucking day. Because women aren’t a fucking cult. And because if we can get just SOME men to stop doing it and pull their mates up on doing it (especially in front of women and girls) we’ll have achieved our purpose.

If you reckon we at MFW are such angry sweary bitches we think all men are like the one in the pic below, you’re a fucking dipshit.

Not only do we love men as partners, fathers and sons (and MFW workmates) but most MFW activism (like all genuine feminism) seeks to improve men’s lives as much as womens’. Our campaigns are for everyone who gives a shit about climate crisis and all inequality and suffering, not just what impacts women.

We won’t stop asking men if they’re okay, either.

Or at least, not until more of them start to get the fucking memo.
