The worst part of listening to @Spotify 's Peaceful Piano station while I work is that it thinks I am a student studying, so it keeps advertising Chegg. 😡 Now I'm just an angry, distracted professor instead of a peaceful, productive professor...
The situation for parents of kids under 5 is so untenable. People are spending weeks without childcare, and, for those who even can work from home, working while watching a toddler is not a thing. Sending love to everyone just trying to make it through. https://t.co/bUH9QhgwL6
@EmilyHGriffith1 So far so good... but I was not anticipating this so early on. I think I need to build some COVID days into my courses this semester just fully expecting quarantine at some point.
I loved speaking at #USCOTS21 this year about expanding opportunities for "underprepared" statistics students. After a year of burnout due to COVID, prepping for the talk helped remind me why I love my job! Video and slides here: https://t.co/73rqc19qNH
Here's a nice article about my @NSF IUSE grant that is underway right now (p.18). I'm having so much fun working on it! https://t.co/4ysfSEt4Nq via @issuu
Two of my @CSUMB stats students are featured in this @AmstatNews article. I'm so proud of them and all the hard work our @csumbmathstat students have been putting in this semester! https://t.co/Z6e93JcXMN
I just finished recording, editing, and posting my last video lecture of the semester. I think I might cry. (I'll let you guess if those are tears of sorrow or joy...)
At the end of each video lesson, I have my students submit a remaining question they have. And the questions are SO GOOD. It's made me realize how many good questions students had, but were were NOT asking, when I used to teach in person (a lifetime ago?).
I’m excited to be highlighted in this @CSUMB article discussing my new NSF grant! Looking forward to improving #statistics and #datascience education through our work.
Good News Comes in Threes ✨
The pandemic has not stopped CSUMB’s mission to improve lives through education, with help from grants.

I have now declined 4 article reviews that in a normal semester, I would have happily said yes to. This is pandemic life with kids at home as an academic. One of the (smallest) ways tenure-track faculty are being affected on their paths to tenure.
Adjusting tenure expectations in light of COVID-19 isn't about lowering standards. It's about reinventing standards for the cohort of assistant professors doing the unanticipated labor of reinventing higher education.
