“Ireland is now the only country in the entire world that invests public money in a greyhound racing industry that is so barbaric it has virtually disappeared everywhere else.” Such a great piece by

Walking by this rotting, decaying, vacant mansion (Aldborough House) in *central Dublin* for almost 10 years, now. (See thread below.)
Flurry of activity for a few months in 2023, now long stopped.
It’s Ireland, so no-one’s really responsible.
This is what Ireland might look like if our housing policy served people instead of investors. In reality, it’s more profitable to park families in hotels while homes rot empty #DerelictIreland@anoisagency
"A five-year study of 460 derelict Cork properties reveals 315 still idle, highlighting slow progress amid Ireland’s deepening housing crisis"
The government & councils need to do so much better

Right now in Kyiv, first responders are clearing the rubble of an ordinary residential building after a Russian strike. Another massive attack against our cities and communities. Killings again. Tragically, at least 8 people have already been confirmed dead. One of them is a child. My condolences to all their families and loved ones.
People may still be trapped under the rubble. Dozens are wounded. These Russian missiles and attack drones today are a clear response to everyone in the world who, for weeks and months, has been calling for a ceasefire and for real diplomacy. Russia chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table. It chooses to continue killing instead of ending the war. And this means that Russia still does not fear the consequences. Russia still takes advantage of the fact that at least part of the world turns a blind eye to murdered children and seeks excuses for Putin.
We expect a reaction from China to what is going on. China has repeatedly called for not expanding the war and for a ceasefire. Yet this is not happening because of Russia. We expect a reaction from Hungary. The death of children should definitely stir far greater emotions than anything else. We expect a response from everyone in the world who has called for peace but now more often stays silent rather than taking principled positions.
And it is definitely time for new, tough sanctions against Russia for everything it is doing. All deadlines have already been broken, dozens of opportunities for diplomacy ruined. Russia must feel accountable for every strike, for every day of this war. Eternal memory to all victims of Russia!
@frank_oconnor@anoisagency Offices and hotels
That's all that planned for this area
So guaranteed that nothing will be done for years yet
But the hoarders and speculators will get wealthier and wealthier
This is #DerelictIreland afterall
Nothing says welcome to Cork City the safe harbour than this absolute crazy vacancy & dereliction wastelands
How this block of speculation & hoarding exists as one of main walking routes to/from centre Bus Station is beyond me
And no a lick of paint is not enough

100% agree with this. To be useful, incentives need to be useable. We cannot rely on labour intensive FDI from the US anymore. It's time for a radical rethink of what type of tech sector we want to have in Ireland.
Why is this plaza in front of the restored Counting House always cordoned off?
And why is The Counting House still vacant?
On South Main St the work was completed in 2021
What a lovely public space it should be along the historic core of Cork City
