You cannot force someone to go against their religious beliefs. You don’t have to share that belief, but you cannot use economic power or other forms of coercion to make someone go against their religion.

Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t take blood. This is based on their understanding of certain parts of the Bible. I have studied those same passages, I see their point, but don’t agree with it. Understanding is different from agreement. I can understand your point and still not agree with it. Blood transfusions are not categorically bad.

Aunty Esther is a Jehovah’s Witness. She will not take blood transfusions even at the cost of her life. Any self-respecting adult should have a hill to die on. This happens to be hers. We should honor her stance rather than denigrate it.

Most of the people condemning her didn’t donate a single Naira but now want to direct how the funds are used.

If you donated through @Wizarab10 for Aunty Esther and found her belief so revolting that you want a refund, please share proof of your payment and I’ll personally refund your donation.

Otherwise, let the woman be. And let those who want to continue donating do so.

Some people have used this incident to rubbish the whole idea of religion. It’s your right to believe there’s no God or that you won’t give an account one day. People believe what they believe.

But it’s wrong, perhaps even evil, to ask someone to do something against their faith just because you have some power over them.

THE COBRA EFFECT

During the British Raj, officials grew concerned about the rising number of venomous cobras in Delhi. To tackle the issue, they introduced a bounty for every dead snake.

At first, the policy seemed successful, many cobras were killed.

But soon, an unintended consequence appeared. Enterprising locals began breeding cobras to claim the reward. Once the government realised this loophole and scrapped the bounty programme, the breeders released their now-worthless snakes.

The result? The cobra population surged to even higher levels than before.

This episode is remembered as the Cobra Effect, a classic example of how well-meaning incentives can backfire, producing the exact opposite of the intended outcome.

The “Cobra Effect” is such a powerful reminder that policies and incentives don’t just create results, they create behaviours.

When you reward outcomes without thinking of human ingenuity, people will always find a shortcut.
That’s why in governance, business, or even personal systems - designing incentives matters more than setting targets, otherwise you end up with more cobras, not less.

I grew up adoring Mahatma Gandhi. I don't know what bullshit they taught in school that influenced that adoration.

Then, I picked up books.

That guy was a racist piece of garbage - absolutely detested Africans.

One of his life goals was to see a world where, he didn't mind Indians inferior to the whites as long as they were classified superior to Africans.

One of the first "fights" he fought on landing South Africa was the enforcement of two separate entrance doors for whites and Africans.

Please pick up history books. It will shock you the amount of reinforced revision we were forced to ingest as children.

Just be open minded, be malleable - because you'll find punctured holes in the very religion, tribe and ideologies you adore.
