Getting it wrong to get it right
Many years ago, I worked with a client who ran a five-star hotel in an exclusive part of London. Running a business in that area was highly competitive. Their clients paid top dollar and expected the best.
He realised that, when service slipped on some level, how their staff responded could result in the guest being even happier with them, and more loyal to them, than if nothing had gone wrong in the first place.
I explained this was all about the 'Service Recovery Paradox’. It can work for you too.

Two words. Client acquisition. Or here’s another two. Business development. Words that fill many business owners with dread.
I would say it’s a challenge that most entrepreneurs I work with struggle with.
In a webinar I ran, the owner of a B2B professional services company said she had a sales challenge: she was finding it difficult to win new business.
Revenues had been flat for a long time. What did I suggest?

You had to be there!
Okay, so channelling my inner James Bond may not have come across in this photo, taken as I spun around faux-dramatically, firing my money guns, but the message was clear.
My ‘performance’ certainly amused the gentleman you can see chuckling behind me. It was an honour to share the stage with the activist and speaker, Satish Kumar.
He not only teaches us so much about solving social problems with imagination, compassion and forgiveness but also, by an amazing quirk of fate, worked and campaigned alongside my late father-in-law, Martin Polden OBE, for many years.
It was an unexpected treat to meet him and hear about their time together.
And what a joy to be with so many familiar and new faces at the annual Happy Startup School Summercamp.
It’s a highlight of the summer, never failing to be uplifting, inspiring and enlightening. There’s a unique vibe at this special gathering, and it was a pleasure to run a workshop on the topic ‘How to be more profitable (without selling your soul).’
I walked the attendees through The Quadruple Bottom Line of Profit, Planet, People and Purpose, showing them how to make healthy profits while building a balanced, sustainable business.
What I learned from a broken heart...
The ancient Japanese art of kintsugi repairs broken pottery, gilding the joins and making it more beautiful than it was before.
A fitting metaphor for turning a negative experience into a positive learning, as I describe in this short video.

Business lessons I’ve learned.
Sometimes, we make business decisions more from our heart than our head. Sometimes sentiment clouds our judgement.
I hold my hand up to this one, but I’m glad it happened because it taught me a lot.
These real life business experiences have been invaluable in giving me a perspective that I can use to help entrepreneurs and make a positive impact on their business.

What are you grateful for?
Gratitude is a powerful emotion.
When your mindset isn’t in the best shape, have you tried saying out loud “Thank you for…” a few times, inserting various things in your life you’re grateful for? I guarantee it’s an uplifting exercise.
Here’s me describing a dramatic event in my life that stopped me in my tracks and reminded me what’s important in life.
