There are some shocking and shameful untruths contained in this parliamentary question by Labour MP @BarryGardiner . Most extraordinarily he refers to the shooting to death of hundreds of unarmed protestors and other citizens by Awami League law enforcement authorities between 16 July to 5 August as "riots" which were caused by the "Jamaat-e-Islami." It begs belief. But, dangerously, it also shows the extraodinary ability of the Awami League/supporters to influence politicians, particularly it seems those from the labour party, who don't do the most minimal research for themselves to find out the most basic facts and presumably just read out questions that others have written for them. And Trump is not yet president!
Gardiner also says that in the recriminatory violence that took place in the first few days after the fall of the Awami League government (when there was no government or police) that most of the violence was "targeting against the minority Hindu community."
That again is a lie. Yes there was communal violence, but most of the attacks by far were on Awami Leagers, most of whom were muslim. That does not justify the attacks, but it is untrue to claim that most of this violence was pitched against minorities.
He also says that Bangladesh is an "Islamic State"!! The constitution does say that Islam is the state religion, but it states that
- "State shall ensure equal status and equal right in the practice of the Hindu, Buddhist, Christian and other religions",
- the high ideals of the consitution are "nationalism, socialism, democracy and secularism"
The idea that Bangladesh is an Islamic State is completely bogus and highly misrepresents the country.
#Bangladesh deeply resents the violent attack into 🇧🇩Assistant High Commission in Agartala | #India, this afternoon, vandalisation of the Mission premise and desecration of 🇧🇩Flag.
Deeply concerned about the attack on the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala 🇮🇳
Such incident is a serious breach of diplomatic norms and warrants immediate action.
