1. I recently gave a talk in Kigali courtesy of the Africa School of Governance as part of my mission to obliterate a fiendish statistic: "Africa has 30% of the world's minerals".

2. This crooked statistic is extremely tough to kill because, at first glance, it is in no one's interest to kill it.

3. Many of the investors that sell Africa use natural resources to get attention. African leaders find that it is a quick way to say that "we matter". Activists need it as a premise for bigger arguments about how everyone is sucking Africa dry.

4. But those that disrespect Africa also love it. How else to prove that Africa is exceptionally misgoverned, lazy, cursed, damned - choose your pick - than to show how "the richest continent in the world is also the poorest"?

5. As far as I am concerned, there is nothing really "positive" about this false statistic.

6. Being acclaimed for having loads of natural resources is not the same as being acclaimed for something you actually "earned." Like acclaiming China's fast growth in robotics. It sounds like a consolation prize: you don't have anything excellent for me to praise, so congrats on your magical rocks and extraordinary soil!

7. In that way, it reinforces a deadlier, more subtle, stereotype: the only good thing to come out of Africa is what nature put in the ground.

8. I always cringe when international editors struggling to find a way to tell global audiences that a story from an African country matter reflexively resort to rattling off some random natural resources or use the "mineral rich" catchall.

9. Niger was in the news recently for some mutiny by disgruntled junior officers or something. Editors kept prefacing the country with "mineral-rich".

10. What is strange about that is that by world standards, Niger is not mineral-rich at all. You would never see Colombia being called "mineral rich" in an international news bulletin. Yet, Colombia earns roughly 20x more than Niger from minerals. Even in uranium, where Niger is considered most significant, Kazakhstan produces more than 12x, and Australia has 5x more reserves, than Niger.

11. To demonstrate the absurdity of this whole affair, I picked a number of random countries, put them in a chart, and added Niger for comparison (see thread).
