🇪🇺 The European Parliament lets #ChatControl 1.0 go through despite a majority voting against it (314:276) – allowing mass scanning of private chats until 2028. Survivors are warning. My analysis and why this is the wrong approach 👇

🇬🇧 EU Govs & Conservatives want to force a 3rd vote on the twice-rejected #ChatControl 1.0 mass scanning of our private messages! 🚨

The EU age verification app is presented as “completely anonymous”. But the risk is that member states (the countries are supposed to create their own versions of the open-source EU app) use it to introduce identity verification that makes it impossible to post anonymously on social media.
The idea behind “completely anonymous” is to use Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) cryptography to break the link between the age credential issuer (EU governments) and the regulated services/sites. Currently, the EU app does not have ZKP functionality, contrasting Ursula von der Leyen’s claim that the app ”is technically ready to be used”. But more importantly, the app is designed to always function without ZKP technology; if ZKP is unavailable, the app falls back to a non-ZKP model. Even if fully developed ZKP technology could be implemented in the future, it would remain an optional extra feature that countries may choose to disable and that the EU could remove at any time.
This means that the EU could decide at any time that ZKP may no longer be used, and in one stroke the app would fall back to its default mode, meaning that every post on social media carries an ID tag. By that point, an infrastructure will already have been rolled out; people will have gotten used to it, and it will be harder to roll it back.

What is at stake here is not whether you agree with this person's views on immigration, or whether you think he communicates his views in the most elegant or respectful way possible. Rather, what is at stake is a core principle: whether or not citizens should be criminally convicted for stating scientifically supported facts or probabilities on the grounds that such statements may be perceived as "hateful" towards this or that group in society. If this sort of case becomes a precedent - and sadly, given the calibre of some judges today, it very well may - then this would deal a heavy blow to democratic debate and to the health and resilence of modern democracies.
This is exactly how the cycle of surveillance and control works: people are two steps ahead of the regulator and the regulator has to tighten their control and become ever more intrusive over time.
“Australia’s social media ban for minors isn’t working: 61% of kids still access accounts, while 4.7M were shut down. Meanwhile, 27% moved to riskier platforms.”
- No surprises here. Regulators just don’t seem to really care. Many critics of these bans including myself have pointed out from early on that they would not only be bad for civil liberties, but ineffective.

🇪🇺📢 As #ChatControl will hopefully end, a new study proves mass scanning tech is flawed & easily evaded. 🔬
To truly protect kids now, we must shift from broken algorithms to targeted police work 🕵️♂️ and strict #SecurityByDesign 🛡️.

🇪🇺 This is #ChatControl 1.0:
📸 48% of reports are harmless (e.g. family photos).
🔞 40% of cases target minors.
And governments want to EXTEND it!
Parliament can still stop it – but we need to email MEPs NOW! 📨👇
