I welcome the call for a Pastoralist Caucus at COP17 and an Independent and Autonomous Global Pastoralist-led Commission to monitor progress toward 2030. When pastoralist Indigenous Peoples’ rights are secured, global biodiversity and food systems thrive. (6/6) #IndigenousRights
I welcome the adoption of the historic Ulaanbaatar Declaration in Mongolia, and express my solidarity with pastoralist Indigenous Peoples and communities around the world in their efforts to secure recognition and protection of their rights, livelihoods & knowledge systems.
Pastoralist women and youth are knowledge-holders, innovators, and leaders. Their effective participation in decision-making, including within their own communities and institutions, is essential to the resilience of pastoralist systems. (5/6) #IndigenousRights
"Indigenous Peoples' rights are not a threat to States," Special Rapporteur @albertkbarume told #EMRIP's 19th session at @UNGeneva.
Over the past 20 years, "States that have protected #IndigenousPeoples' rights have become more stable, more inclusive, and more equal," he said.
The Implementation Gap
Even in countries with progressive legal frameworks, the principle of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) is often ignored, and critical court decisions remain unimplemented.
Two Landmark Thematic Reports
This year, I'm presenting studies on indigenous women’s #reproductiverights and the demarcation and titling of lands. Both indigenous women’s bodies & ancestral lands have been primary targets for those seeking to erase their cultures & existence.
With 51 country visits and 1,000+ communications since 2001, the #SRIP mandate remains a "lifeline" for defenders. Now, we must work to close the "implementation gap" and safeguard these rights for the next 25 years.

Ecuador: I express my deep concern over the attempt to forcibly evict the Kichwa Tzawata-Ila-Chukapi Community due to a conflict with a private company. There are reports of injuries, power outages, and the criminalization of community defenders. #IndigenousRights
In addressing terrorism, migration, armed conflict & cross-border challenges, it's critical to leverage the fact that many #IndigenousPeoples' territories are located in remote and cross-border areas, & should be considered allies & assets for addressing intl security challenges.
