Ahead of the 25th anniversary of 9/11, CBC News' senior director of journalistic standards and public trust, Basem Boshra, instructed CBC News staff to “not refer to the Sept. 11 attacks as terrorist attacks.”

Changing the meaning of words and rewriting history is exactly what Orwell wrote and warned about in 1984, and this is exactly what is happening in Canada. It is also what most Canadians seem ignorant to and unconcerned with, which is (again) why I have been pulling out my hair and screaming at the top of my lungs for about a decade now, trying to warn Canadians and wake them up.

Meanwhile, the response to me has essentially been "stfu/stop saying mean things about Canada."

I mean, I won't ever stop, but just remember you chose this, and you ignored everyone who pushed back.

The Persecution That Doesn’t Make the Headlines

I am a Muslim convert to Christianity. I lived for 15 years as a Christian believer in Morocco, much of that time in what we called the underground church.

Listen carefully, because this is what “moderate Islam” looked like for us:

Morocco is considered one of the most moderate Muslim countries. That is true compared with Mauritania and Libya, where converts from Islam face the death penalty, or Egypt, Jordan, Syria, the West Bank, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Pakistan, where converts face imprisonment, torture, intimidation, or severe persecution.

But here is the reality of “moderate” Morocco.

We gathered secretly in homes every Sunday because churches were for foreign Christians, not Moroccan converts. We sang in low voices so the neighbors would not hear us. We arrived two at a time to avoid suspicion. If anyone asked, we pretended it was simply a gathering of family and friends.

We baptized converts in bathtubs.

I was baptized in a bathtub myself. A missionary and a few Moroccan Christians were the only people present.

We kept our house churches small, usually fewer than twenty people. When they became too large, we split them. Christmas and a few special occasions were exceptions.

Police raided Christian gatherings, confiscated Christian materials, dragged believers to police stations, interrogated them, threatened them, and humiliated them with vulgar language.

Our children had to go to school and study Islam and memorize the Quran even though their parents were Christians.

We could not freely give our children Christian names. The government did not need to write “Christian names are forbidden” in bold letters. The authorities simply refused to register them.

Our marriages were treated as Islamic marriages under Sharia because the Moroccan state refused to recognize us for what we actually were: Moroccan Christians.

A Moroccan Christian woman could not simply marry a foreign Christian man as a Christian. He had to establish before the authorities that he was Muslim because, according to the government, she was still a Muslim.

The state decided our religion for us.

Even death did not end it.

When a Moroccan Christian died, he was buried in a Muslim cemetery under Islamic rituals because the government still considered him Muslim. I remember one Moroccan Christian who died in Tangier. We had to do the impossible to get his body to Ceuta so he could receive a Christian funeral.

Imagine having to smuggle your religious identity across a border just to be buried according to your own faith.

We could not establish our own legal Moroccan churches. We could not get permission to build even one church for Moroccan converts. Our house churches were illegal gatherings. We lived at the mercy of the police. Any meeting could be raided. Any neighbor could report us.

Foreign Christians had churches.

Moroccan Christians had secrecy, whispers, living rooms, bathtubs, police interrogations, and fear.

And then Muslims lecture the West about “Islamophobia.”

Spare me.

De rechtszaken worden bekostigd door een keten die loopt van de Postcode Loterij, via een aandeelhouder van DPG Media, tot een fonds dat óók de milieulobby in Brussel financiert. En de afzwaaiende MOB-huisjurist is lid van een milieurechtvereniging vol rechters, rechtbankmedewerkers en rijksambtenaren, waar hij zelfs nog vorig jaar als spreker optrad. De buitenstaander, zo blijkt, is in werkelijkheid een vaste gast aan de tafels van de macht.

It is a simple biological truth. But why is it treated as a threat?

Because when a society begins to separate words from physical reality, clear definitions expose the contradiction. The word woman points not merely to a feeling or social role, but to the female sex… a reality grounded in the human body.

That truth should not threaten anyone’s dignity. Every person deserves compassion and respect. But compassion does not require us to make language meaningless. If stating what a woman is becomes dangerous, perhaps the real threat is not the definition… but the loss of a shared reality.

Leaving Islam is not like leaving Christianity.

When a Christian leaves Christianity, whether into atheism, agnosticism, or some form of spirituality, they are still moving within a moral landscape shaped by Christianity itself.

Western civilization is the child of Christendom.

The ex-Christian is not existentially disoriented, because the cultural air he breathes remains Christian, even if God has been removed from the equation.

He does not need to rebuild his world. The world he lives in is enough. the same world that was already built by Christianity.

In that sense, the ex-Christian remains Christian, whether he likes it or not.

By contrast, when a Muslim leaves Islam, he inevitably begins to build his new morality upon the foundations that Christianity laid and the West later globalized, whether he realizes it or not.

Concepts like freedom of conscience, intrinsic human dignity, the moral status of women, and the rejection of coercion in religion are not neutral, universal values. They are historically Judeo-Christian values, developed through centuries of theological, legal, and cultural evolution in the West.

If that same ex-Muslim remains in, or is surrounded by an Islamic culture, the dissonance becomes unbearable.

Because he is now internally structured by one moral system, but externally surrounded by another that is categorically antithetical.

When a Christian leaves Christianity, he leaves a room and stays in the same house.

When a Muslim leaves Islam, he is exiled from the house entirely.

Jesaja 5:20 is één van mijn favoriete Bijbelteksten, omdat hij precies beschrijft hoe de wereld van nu eruitziet. Wat duizenden jaren lang als normaal en goed werd beschouwd, wordt nu als extreem en slecht afgeschilderd. Terwijl wat duidelijk verkeerd is, ineens als vooruitstrevend en moedig wordt geprezen.
