I have just spoken with the U.S. President’s envoys. They have already begun working with the Russian side today. From the moment of this conversation, we are ready to observe a ceasefire in airstrikes against the cities involved in the negotiation process. A seven-year-old Muslim girl is made to cover her hair whilst attended a state funded school.

The school calls it Islamic dress. The council calls it “individual liberty”. And when people complained, the answer was not to free the Muslim girl from the rule.

It was to exempt the non-Muslim one.

For the avoidance of any doubt, compulsory religious covering of a seven-year-old girl is oppression.

When the state funds it, calls it liberty, and looks away because it is frightened of the adults who asked for it, the state is not watching that oppression. It is taking part in it.

This is my view of what has happened at Barnet Hill Academy, Barnet Council and the question now sitting on Education Secretary Lucy Powell’s desk.
