There is a whale known as the “52 Hz Whale” (sometimes called the loneliest whale in the world) that has been swimming the oceans for decades calling out at a frequency of 52 Hertz, a pitch no other known whale species uses or responds to.
Scientists first detected it in the 1980s, and it has been tracked sporadically ever since. While most whales communicate in the 10–40 Hz range, this individual sings alone in its own unique “voice.” It travels vast distances, often following migration routes but never seeming to find companions.
This is a deep-sea isopod. Dr. Johanna Weston, deep-ocean biologist and guest investigator at @WHOI, is confident this is Bathyopsurus nybelini, one of her favorite animals. Learn why via the YouTube caption: https://t.co/yDxWrRjS97
