If you think the people in our government cares about the environment, Gina Lopez was kicked out from being the DENR secretary by 16 over 8 votes against her.

Within 10 months in her post, she closed 23 mining operations, banned open-pit mining and shut down half of the country's mining companies.

Unfortunately, members of the congressional committee decided to remove her, as some of the 16 members who voted are connected on the mining industry, which explains why most of mining operations resumed after Gina Lopez got fired.

This is one of the most disgusting examples of our politicians prioritizing their personal interest over environmental welfare.

If only Ma’am Gina Lopez were still here, ano kaya ang magiging situation ng environment natin ngayon? Baka mas marami pa sanang lugar ang naprotektahan, mas mahigpit ang laban para sa kalikasan, at mas may boses ang mga komunidad na naaapektuhan.

"Hindi ito usapin kung may karapatan bang mag-rally ang INC. Meron. May freedom of speech. May freedom of assembly. May religious freedom. Hindi ito debate club na kapag hindi mo gusto ang mensahe, buburahin mo na ang karapatan.

Pero may karapatan din ang nurse na pumasok sa duty. May karapatan ang empleyadong hindi ma-late. May karapatan ang commuter na makauwi nang hindi ginagawang extra sa political teleserye ng may kaso. The Constitution protects peaceful assembly, but it does not automatically convert EDSA into a private prayer room, campaign venue, or loyalty checkpoint.

Religious freedom protects belief. It protects worship. It protects the right to speak, gather, and petition the government. Pero hindi siya magic pass para gawing sacrament ang traffic jam. Ang perwisyo ay perwisyo pa rin, kahit may dasal, tarpaulin, at bloc voting sa background.

Under BP 880, kapag public assembly sa public place tulad ng kalsada, highway, plaza, o iba pang public space, kailangan ng written permit, maliban sa recognized exceptions. Hindi ito obscure legal trivia; basic public order ito. At hindi rin ito censorship. Permit and coordination are not there to silence speech. They are there so one group’s freedom does not swallow everyone else’s day.

Kasi kapag kalsada ang ginamit mo, hindi lang gobyerno ang kinakausap mo. Dinadamay mo ang pasahero, driver, nurse, janitor, call center agent, estudyante, delivery rider, pasyente, at empleyadong may biometrics na walang pakialam sa legal strategy ng kahit sinong politiko. Kaya ang tanong dito hindi, “Bakit bawal silang magsalita?”

Ang tanong: bakit ginawang collateral damage ang commuters sa defense strategy ng isang politiko?

Lalo na kung authentic ang mga kumakalat na text blasts, lumalabas na hindi ito simpleng spontaneous expression. “Surprise rally,” sabi sa mensahe. “Walang magpo-post sa social media.” Kapag sinadya mong itago sa publiko ang plano mong okupahin ang pangunahing kalsada nila sa oras ng rush hour, hindi lang ito exercise of expression. Para kang nag-ambush ng working class, tapos ang excuse mo ay constitutional rights.

At para saan ang “emergency” na ito? Hindi para sa kalamidad. Hindi para sa presyo ng bigas. Hindi para sa sahod. Hindi para sa ospital. Para ito sa kaso ni Rep. Marcoleta, na umiikot sa allegation tungkol sa ₱75 million in campaign donations or gifts allegedly received in three separate transactions, an amount above the ₱50 million threshold associated with plunder under Philippine law.

Malinaw: allegation pa lang ito. May presumption of innocence. May karapatan siyang sumagot. May karapatan siyang magdepensa sa tamang forum. Pero iba ang “ipagtanggol sa korte” sa “iparamdam sa estado na marami kami, kaya mag-ingat kayo.”

Kasi ang hustisya, hindi paramihan ng attendance. Kung sino ang may pinakamalaking crowd, hindi siya ang may hawak ng due process. Kung ganyan ang batas, magsara na ang mga korte at magpa-registration na lang sa Philippine Arena. “Your Honor, may 80,000 kami sa venue, therefore acquitted.”

Kung selective justice ang reklamo, valid iyon kung ang demand ay kasuhan ang lahat ng may ebidensya. Tama iyon. Dapat walang sagrado, walang untouchable, walang VIP lane sa accountability. Pero kapag ang ibig sabihin ng selective justice ay “huwag galawin ang amin hangga’t hindi niyo nauuna ang iba,” hindi na iyon prinsipyo. That is exemption wearing perfume.

Accountability is not a buffet. Hindi puwedeng gutom ka sa hustisya kapag kalaban ang kakasuhan, pero biglang religious fasting kapag kakampi na ang nasa plato.

Sa huli, ang ordinaryong commuter ang nagbayad ng inconvenience. Hindi sila Ombudsman. Hindi sila prosecutor. Hindi sila complainant. Pero sila ang naipit, na-late, nawalan ng kita, napagalitan sa trabaho, at napilitang mag-adjust sa problemang hindi naman nila ginawa. Sa simpleng Tagalog: damay. Sa legal language: disproportionate burden on the public. Sa kalye: perwisyo.

At hindi porke religious group ang gumawa, automatic banal ang perwisyo. Ang traffic jam ay traffic jam. Hindi siya nagiging sacrament dahil may organisadong attendance. Hindi siya nagiging moral crusade dahil sabay-sabay ang dating. Hindi siya nagiging justice movement dahil malaki ang crowd.

The standard must be simple and applied to all: INC, DDS, Kakampink, leftist, pro-government, anti-government, labor group, student group, civic group, o fans club ng sinigang. Same rules. Permit. Coordination. Public safety plan. Clear route. Clear dispersal. Respect for commuters. Maximum tolerance from the state, yes. But maximum tolerance is not maximum entitlement.

Constitutionally, they have the right to speak. Politically, they have the right to support Marcoleta. Legally, Marcoleta has the right to defend himself. But no institution, however large, religious, political, or influential, has the democratic right to turn commuters into bargaining chips.

Kapag ang depensa sa plunder allegation ay nagsisimula sa planadong traffic jam, hindi hustisya ang pinapakita. Power ang pinapakita.
