Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, Pope Francis began his journey not as a theologian, but as a scientist. With a diploma in chemistry, he worked at the Hickethier-Bachmann Laboratory in Argentina before answering the call to priesthood. But even as he embraced the cloth, he never turned his back on science. Instead, he became a rare bridge—championing dialogue between science and spirituality, urging both communities to listen, learn, and act for the good of all creation.

Through Laudato Si’, his groundbreaking encyclical on the environment, Pope Francis gave voice to the Earth’s cry for help, awakening scientists, citizens, and world leaders alike to the urgent need for ecological action and ethical innovation. He reminded us that science is not just a tool, but a moral responsibility when guided by compassion.

Today, we grieve not just a religious leader, but a fellow steward of knowledge and the planet. His light will continue to guide us, especially those of us working in science and education, toward a future where truth, faith, and love walk hand in hand.

You showed us that we could be scientists and believers, dreamers and doers. We will carry your mission forward, with hearts open, minds curious, and hands ready to serve.
