For many young Kenyans in the 1980s and 1990s, the Safari Rally was more than just a sporting event. The roar of rally cars and the excitement surrounding the competition inspired generations and created lifelong dreams.
As he prepares to leave his position as Chief Executive Officer of the WRC Safari Rally, Charles Gacheru can reflect on having turned that dream into reality while overseeing a transformative period for one of Africa’s most iconic sporting events.
Appointed in February 2024 by former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, Gacheru was tasked with reducing operational costs, attracting corporate investment and professionalising the rally’s management structure.
Despite limited motorsport experience at the time of his appointment, the former sports marketing executive quickly adapted to the demands of rally management and led the transition of the Safari Rally from a government-funded event into a commercially driven operation.
Raised in Nairobi’s Shauri Moyo estate, Gacheru credits sports with shaping his early life and keeping many young people away from negative influences.
From those humble beginnings, he went on to build IMG Kenya into one of East Africa’s leading sports agencies, managing sponsorship portfolios worth billions across football, athletics, rugby and other sports.
During his tenure, Gacheru oversaw the introduction of new rally routes and the establishment of the Rally Village at Morendat, which significantly improved the fan experience and boosted the event’s profile.
He also navigated major financial and operational challenges, including delayed funding, rising WRC Promoter fees and disputes within local motorsport structures.
“We managed to reduce expenses within our control, but the increasing WRC-related costs remained a major challenge,” Gacheru said.
Despite those difficulties, the WRC Safari Rally continued to grow into one of the most followed rallies globally while also serving as a major platform to market Kenya internationally.
Gacheru leaves office before the expiry of his contract to allow a new management team adequate time to prepare for future editions of the rally.
He departs having helped secure an agreement in principle to extend the Safari Rally’s partnership with the WRC Promoter from 2027 to 2031, although outstanding promoter fees remain a concern.
“The Safari Rally belongs to the people of Kenya and its commercial potential must be fully realised,” he said.

There is something quietly genius about Total petrol stations. They add the area name to the brand signage. On routes I have never used, I don’t look for a petrol station, I look out for a Total. Underrated branding move. 🙌
