Remember Vloog Theron, the late legendary South African conman?
He stole an elephant while studying at Stellenbosch University and boasted that he attended church on Sundays to steal collections.
I was his counsel many moon ago in fraud charges in the Cape Town Regional Court. He had convinced investors that a plane was stranded in Lapland and that all he needed was petrol money to bring it to South Africa. There it would be sold at a handsome profit to be shared by the investors.
The victims were so embarrassed by being taken for a ride that they made it impossible for the investigating officer to prepare the case for trial and the charges were withdrawn.
He is credited for taking the Kubus pyramid scheme from state to state in the US and arrested only after Martin Weltz, the editor of Noseweek tipped the FBI off.
If the legend is true, Vloog was the last inmate in the infamous Alcatraz prison.
He was overweight when his prison sentence started and slim when released.
Vloog then pulled off one of the biggest dieting scams in US history using a photograph of him before Alcatraz and after Alcatraz.
Legend has it that the FBI was so appalled by his trickery that they deported him back to South Africa, rather than sending him back to a US jail.
Vloog told me over lunch during his criminal trial that Spielberg was going to make a film about him and that Bruce Willis would play him. Demi Moore would play his wife.
When I appeared for the Noseweek in an unrelated defamation trial, Martin Weltz explained that ordinary people are not equipped to deal with conmen like Vloog.
It turns out that the bigger the lie the more likely people will believe it. Perhaps this explains why ordinary people fall for conspiracy theories.

They told us in medical school that cholesterol causes heart attacks.
3,000 surgeries taught me that it is just not that simple.
Retweet and reply "Yes" and I'll DM you the 5 things I wish knew earlier about cholesterol.
@lungsta04lulu @HenryFrancisFy1 @LangaThera94811 Maybe it is how you see the world what is wrong with you. There are so many good and so few bad. But u will choose to see the bad. Many well doing white farmers were killed. Men at whose funerals blacks cried.
@LangaThera94811 @HenryFrancisFy1 I am aware of that. Horrible. I am also not denying that foreigners commit a lot of crime but so does locals. Lot of gangs is from different nationalities.
@lungsta04lulu @HenryFrancisFy1 @LangaThera94811 Find out who Dirk Steenkamp from Vredefort was. Mega farmer giving bursaries to black kids. Gunned down. Plenty such incidents. Talk when you know
