The sexualized lower half of their bodies (as well as that of the mannequins) possibly represents Maria, who might have been on James' mind long before she manifested, as a means to cope with the stress of being Mary's caretaker. The novel mentions he wanted to meet new women but couldn't bring himself to cheat on Mary while she was sick.
It's especially shocking if we take into consideration that James hits and stomps the monsters with so much rage and disgust.
