Strengthening Collaboration for Cholera Prevention and Control in India

On 18 June 2026, an Orientation Workshop on the Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) was conducted to enhance understanding, coordination, and preparedness for cholera prevention and control efforts in India.

During the workshop, Secretary General of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Mr. Lalit Wadhwa, highlighted the importance of collective efforts to eliminate waterborne diseases and strengthen community resilience.

Mr. Kaustubh Kukde, Joint Secretary, IRCS, emphasized the critical role of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) interventions in preventing waterborne diseases and improving public health outcomes. Mr. John Entwistle highlighted the importance of coordination, partnerships, and collaborative approaches in effectively addressing the challenges posed by waterborne diseases.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders, including Dr. Das from ICMR, Dr. Chaurasiya from Swachh Bharat Mission, along with representatives from IFRC and the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) National Headquarters. Participants shared valuable insights on the current burden of waterborne diseases, ongoing initiatives, and actions required to strengthen prevention, preparedness, and response mechanisms.

Representatives from IRCS State and Union Territory Branches also participated virtually in the workshop, sharing their experiences, observations, and feedback on addressing waterborne disease challenges at the community level. Their valuable inputs contributed to understanding local priorities and strengthening a coordinated approach across the country.

The discussions focused on strengthening multisectoral collaboration, aligning national priorities with the GTFCC Global Roadmap to End Cholera by 2030, and exploring opportunities to support the development of a detailed proposal for the GTFCC.

The workshop was coordinated with the support of Mr. Abhishek Rimal and provided an important platform for stakeholders to identify priorities, share technical expertise, and work towards coordinated action against cholera and other waterborne diseases.

Through stronger partnerships, knowledge sharing, and collective action, we can move closer to a healthier and cholera-free future. 🌏
