I'm just in the process of trying to book a flight now and I'm strongly reminded of this. I really don't understand why this type of pricing model is acceptable to anyone.

Variable pricing for transport (flights, trains) is super weird.

I feel like things should be regulated so that flights must set fixed prices on all their routes. It makes no sense to me that I could be sitting beside someone on a flight where I paid €10 and they paid €250

2 adults & child $4.4k yesterday, today $6.5k.

I've no idea how wildly variable pricing like this is meant to be beneficial to the consumer?! Some people get lucky, others extorted?

@DaraghThomas I suspect there'd be lower demand, and therefore less flights needing to be scheduled, if there was fixed pricing on routes.

I guess it's good to come back to the public transport analogy - no one would accept variable pricing on their local bus route, so why accept it elsewhere

@DaraghThomas That's the theory, but it's sort of been corrupted now - the airlines flog the first x seats super cheap (often to people that wouldn't have flown if it wasn't that cheap). This way they artificially inflate demand with these bargains.

@DaraghThomas And I don't really see it helping customers - because I'm certain you have lots of times where a customer *needs* to travel (eg sudden illness etc) and they're stuck picking a flight that costs them 4x what it really should.

@StandardNotes Cleared data, uninstalled, reinstalled. Now first launch the app just immediately crashes... eeek! Desktop app is working fine still though

@StandardNotes There seems to be a new bug in the Android app (updated 11th Oct) where I can't open any Checklist type notes - app immediately force closes.

@StandardNotes Yep, now I just can't even sign in. Tested on wifi and 4G, checked other sites are loading. Switching to the new mobile experience and tried logging in there, still no joy.

"if I fly with operator X on date X but return with operator Y on date Y, then it's slightly cheaper"

If these routes had fixed pricing it would quickly put an end to this wastefulness. We need to be finding as many ways to reduce unnecessary energy waste/carbon emission, and this seems like one area where substantial savings could be made.

This madness with flights expands further, where it's often cheaper to fly much longer routes, which makes no sense.

I know someone who ended up flying Dublin-Frankfurt-Madrid-New York because it was substantially cheaper than either DUB->NY or DUB-MAD->NY.
