Here's the part most people miss: working memory and attention aren't two separate systems that occasionally talk to each other. They run on the same neural circuit — Panichello and Buschman's 2021 Nature paper found the prefrontal cortex uses the same control mechanism for both, whether you're holding an item in mind or attending to something in front of you.
You can't hold a plan without holding your attention on it. The two collapse into one mechanism the second you try to move through an actual day.
