The Justice Centre’s latest report, The Safe Social Media Act: A threat to our privacy and freedom of expression, explains how Bill C-34 would force identity screening of all Canadians using social media, mandate monitoring of private AI conversations, and create a powerful new regulator with vast powers to censor speech.

Bill C-34 unjustifiably limits Charter rights to privacy, free expression, and parental authority. Targeted age-verification for dedicated pornography websites is a reasonable measure. An under-16 social media ban that requires verifying every user is not.

Evidence from Australia shows that even after implementing such a ban, most under-16s still have social media accounts, while parental awareness of their children’s use declined in some cases. The result is greater privacy risks to everyone through expanded data collection and identity screening, without achieving the stated goal of keeping children off these platforms. 

The most serious online harms against children and non-consensual intimate images are already prohibited under the Criminal Code. Better enforcement of existing laws is the right path, not population-wide surveillance and a new censor.
