I’ve been representing a pair of caring adoptive parents for the past two years. When a little girl was born drug-addicted and ill, they were the only ones who stepped up to take her in. They connected her with all the doctors she needed and became her parents. A month after finalizing the adoption, a district court set aside the adoption on grounds we thought improper. It lead to over a year of contentious litigation to protect this child. While we continued with an appeal, we also fought over guardianship in a different district court. Today, the Supreme Ruled issued an opinion in the client’s favor. In doing so, the Supreme Court clarified the law underlying an important tool litigants have to set aside court orders. It’s outcomes like these that make it worth it to be a lawyer.
