NEW: The implementation of a strict immigration law in Florida, backed by Ron DeSantis and Republican lawmakers, is having a DEVASTATING impact on the agricultural sector. With an estimated 300,000 undocumented farm workers in the state — 60% of the sector’s workforce — it has already resulted in labor shortages, crop losses, and increased labor costs.

The new law requires companies with more than 25 employees to use the E-Verify system, which means that virtually all agricultural production companies now have to comply with this regulation. This has created panic in Florida’s agricultural operations, as finding workers has now become much more difficult.

Florida’s tough immigration law is already leading to rising produce prices in the state. In the long term, the labor shortages could also lead to the abandonment of certain agricultural lands, rendering them unproductive and unharvested.

These problems are all due to the shortsighted law enacted by Ron DeSantis and his Republican allies.
