The "downed pilot" story was a fabricated cover for a failed US special forces operation to seize Iran's primary stockpile of highly enriched uranium (roughly 60% purity, estimated at 440–970 pounds).

The main stockpile was located at Isfahan—the precise site where the pilot was officially reported "lost."

This explains the heavy US bombing of the area under the guise of a search-and-rescue effort, and why the C-130s were destroyed on the ground with no American loss of life. The aircraft were hit while special operations forces attempted to secure the material. The mission quickly turned into a major emergency extraction to rescue the trapped troops.
