“If you gave the full context, people thought you a rambling old fool. If you didn’t give the context, people thought you a laconic old fool." Yid Army
Bobby Fischer. In the 1960s, he spent all his chess winnings on bespoke clothes, even while living in a rundown Brooklyn apartment. He rotated between 17 bespoke suits, which were made for him by tailors in Germany, California, NYC, and England. His shirts were made for him by Sy Devore, who also tailored for President JFK. He also had five pairs of bespoke shoes made by a Hungarian shoemaker based in uptown NYC.
In his usual, arrogant way, he once said: “I hate ready-made suits, button-down collars, and sports shirts. I don’t want to look like a bum. I get up in the morning, I put on a suit.”
In a Harper’s interview, he also said: “You know they say you can tell the decline of a nation when the people begin to lose interest in their clothes. Nowadays, if you’re dressed up, people think you’re a dandy. In the olden days, the most virile men were the men who dressed the best.”
Unfortunately, Fischer's interest didn't last past the 1970s. After his famous Cold War match against Boris Spassky, where he won the world title, Fischer became a paranoid recluse—and with that, slowly began to look like one too. His brain sadly was eventually consumed by paranoia and bigotry.
Chess has all the attributes of an ancient curse: too deep for mere relaxation, too difficult to master, too unrewarding to guarantee good living, and too beautiful to quit.
@Felixatlante12 Hola! Saludos!!!
@GMPeteWells sorry for taking this long, but what a nice game you played vs Shirov in Gibraltar (2006)! I was browsing a book by Neil McDonald, saw your game and replayed it. Really cool!! Best from Mexico City
