Exactly 25 years ago, I was curled in a psych ward, with no hope and no voice. Today, one of my best friends knew I'd be reliving that day, so she made this collection for me of what reviewers have said about my writing, and honestly I'm brought to tears.
I rarely share stuff like this, or even look too much at reviews, and I hope it doesn't seem prideful; I'm just feeling so grateful to be alive and to have people who support me in my mad, wild hope that I might find words to help others on their way.
Joseph Fasano
"A poet brave enough to return poetry to its troubled and eternal origins. This is the poet I trust to see the world as it is, quietly writhing around us, like Kafka and Rilke before him."
—Dorothea Lasky
"Fasano makes pain almost bearable with the beauty of his language, the wild leaps of his metaphors. His is a strong and original voice."
—Linda Pastan
"In writing clearly and evocatively about the human experience, Fasano has invited us all inside."
—Maggie Smith
"Fasano is a writer of special bravery."
—Ilya Kaminsky
"I am in awe."
—Andrés Cerpa
"Beautiful, harrowing, precise."
—Publishers Weekly
"Fasano...is a poet for the living, for life."
—The Massachusetts Review
"Elemental and eloquent in their quest for heart-truths, Joseph Fasano's lucid poems have the beauty of a questing imagination, alert and aware on its journey through this world."
—Gregory Orr
"Joseph Fasano is a visionary poet. His poems illuminate our tattered world and make it sing."
—Deborah Landau
"If you've ever felt the power of Rumi, Mary Oliver, Audre Lorde, David Whyte, or John O'Donohue's poetry, you'll understand that the time for Joseph Fasano is now."
—Laura Simms
@ErikVoorhees There's no bigger socialist constantly asking for a handout than billionaires. Tesla and SpaceX only exist because they were allowed to repeatedly fail while being subsidized by taxpayer money. Find a better analogy Erik
The promise of colonialism has always been the same: surrender your dignity, abandon your dead, betray your people, and in return we’ll let you participate in your own subjugation. What an offer.
Now that Gaza lies in ruins—shattered, like a beloved face after a long brutality—Israel moves with a terrible confidence to the next act: The act of leaving every soul there not merely wounded, but permanently disabled. Injured, sick, hungry, homeless, without work, without hope. This is not war’s collateral damage. This is design.
As my friend Gideon Levy writes—and he knows, he knows—this is the prelude to expulsion. Think of it: a society without teachers, without doctors, without social workers, without engineers, without clerks. That is not a society. That is a holding pen. A slow erasure. And when nothing functions—no school, no hospital, no office, no heart—then it becomes ‘easy,’ they tell themselves, to scatter the people to the four corners of the earth. Like seeds from a broken pod, except no soil will take them.
We must name this. Not with rage alone, though rage is honest. But with the cold, clear tears of recognition: they are making life impossible so that departure becomes the only ‘choice.’ And the world watches, adjusts its spectacles, and calls for restraint. Restraint! There is no restraint in a slow drowning.
"In practice...technology is never neutral, because it takes on the characteristics of those who devise it, finance it, regulate it, and use it."
—Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV: "Among these ideologies, I consider particularly insidious the one that suggests that every person must earn or justify his or her own worth, to the point of attributing greater value to those who are more efficient or effective. From this perspective, persons end up being reduced to a means of achieving results, a resource to be used and exploited, and are no longer recognized as a proper end in themselves who should never be instrumentalized. The value of persons, however, does not depend on what they achieve or produce. There are rights that apply to everyone simply by virtue of being human, and no human power can legitimately deny or arbitrarily limit them." #MagnificaHumanitas

Giribala Singh isn’t your evil-saas prototype from old TV serials, stirring kheer and plotting in the kitchen. She is the upgraded 21st century version: English-speaking. Educated. Respected. Legally aware. Powerful. Her violence is no longer loud. It is strategic. Documented. Sanitised. And that’s what makes marriage terrifying for young women today.
