We estimate about 10% of mining trucks in China are now driverless; 6000 vehicles per year hauling 75 tons 50 cycles/day = 22.5Mt. If only mining bituminous coal with 6MWh/t generating power at 40% efficiency ≈ 2.25TW ≈ can provide 1/4 of global electricity generation capacity
@jessi_cata ∄ satisfying answer to this question as of 2026 because non-math people overestimate how much mathematicians agree (esp. between pure and applied) on what constitutes useful progress in math
AI progress just sort of reveals that these cultural gaps were never bridged properly
one possible timeline of "money won't exist" : future ai agent swarms will spin up "flash" exchanges--on securities/assets/resource claims--much faster than humans, and use prices/auction mechanisms to reduce information dimensionality in order to coordinate behaviors
@Renet29304 Well yeah even people in the same field do not agree on what problems are important
E.g. if one worked on math physics, why would one necessarily also be interested in number theory? The likelihood of that is probably smaller than people think
Employees expect bonuses when company does well. At big companies or in good years, key contributors can get bonuses multiple x their base at yr end. Our company has ~10% outstanding shares in ESOP (~value 1B RMB), w/ most employees participating. 6/6
Our company in Changsha, China reps the type of medium-sized tech company (heavy-duty robotics, ~500 employees, avg 30yo) in hinterland (also e.g. X'ian, Chongqing, Chengdu). Publicly listed and Forbes Top 50 Tech, but not Mi/Huawei size. Hire from cs/robotics/trad eng. 1/6
In the same vein i wonder a lot about Chinese engineers.
The people behind DJI, unitree, Xiaomi/Huawei, etc. Are they like techbros? Are they granola-ey? What are their hobbies, are they all riding bikes and rock climbing too? And if not, what's the analog?
We do have weekends. Our company is not 996, closer to 865 with 2 hr lunch/nap break. But will work late upon project deadlines like everywhere else. Many employees look for WLB but others also think regular overtime signals excellence; mostly about striking balance. 5/6
🤖 The 2026 World #AI Conference (WAIC) opens in #Shanghai on July 17, bringing together global innovators under the theme "Intelligent Partners, Co-Creating the Future."
Since its launch in 2018, WAIC has showcased #China's rapid AI development while creating new opportunities for Chinese AI companies to expand their global presence. Companies such as CiDi Inc., a leader in autonomous driving and industrial mobility AI, and Totodi, a provider of fintech and regtech solutions, are among those driving innovation.

@hsu_steve I guess not all that surprising: The set of open problems in mathematics is countably infinite, while the number of all living mathematicians is a finite integer. So eventually computation will be able to find solutions to open problems where humans fail.
I spoke with @SCMPNews about electric truck penetration in China. The trajectory that surprised everyone in passenger EVs is quietly beginning with trucks.

@jxmnop Intuition, maybe? The visual world is selected for outcomes of stable processes that adhere to physical laws. Chances better that the data can be dimensionality reduced. Language contains the essence and history of human thought, exhibiting arbitrary path dependence.
