In Kuchlak district, Balochistan, police arrested 36-year-old Abdul Bari, who, citing financial problems, tried to marry off his 3-year-old daughter named Babu to a 60-year-old man.

The deal was priced at 2.5 million rupees (25 lakh), about $9,000.

Police stopped the illegal marriage before it was completed and arrested the father. The child was taken from the family and placed under state protection.

Local media said the buyer then tried to take her 7-year-old sister instead.

Pakistan is one of the leading countries in the world for the absolute number of child marriages: UNICEF puts the figure at about 19 million “child brides.”

Around 18% of all girls in Pakistan are married before 18. In Balochistan, where the case of 3-year-old Babu took place, up to 20% of adolescents aged 15–19 are already married.
