Astronomers have detected a radio signal from interstellar comet 31/ATLAS, which is moving through the Solar System toward Earth.
The signal was received on October 24 using the South African MeerKAT radio telescope. Scientists detected radiation at frequencies of 1665 and 1667 MHz. No such signals were detected earlier, in September.
According to Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, on March 16, 2026, when the comet approaches Jupiter, the Juno spacecraft will attempt to detect the signal at low frequencies.
Comet 31/ATLAS was discovered on July 1, 2025. Its hyperbolic orbit indicates that it is not bound by the Sun's gravity and will leave our solar system forever after its flyby.
