Explained the mass destruction in Neenah, Doty Island, Menasha and Appleton
The Appleton – Menasha, Wisconsin tornado from today (July 27) appears to have produced a meteotsunami! This phenomenon can occur when a strong tornado or severe thunderstorm rapidly displaces water on a lake or other body of water, creating a localized tsunami-like wave. A similar event was documented with the powerful EF3 tornado that struck Canton Lake, Oklahoma, on May 24, 2011.

I’m glad you feel that way, but the second image is not the tornado that occurred in Appleton. That tornado was much more rain wrapped and likely wider than the tornado in the second image. The second image also doesn’t show a ton of tall buildings or anything resembling being in the middle of a city.
@KateBekx @mymomcare Nearer Appleton, which has some nasty damage also. Lights went out for a second and came back on. We were just in the Menasha area the other day. This is just terrible!😔
@EvanYager1 Interesting, good to know! I’ve never been to Wisconsin, let alone Appleton so I wasn’t sure. There’s been a lot of videos claiming to be the Appleton tornado so I wanted to confirm!
The Tornado that hit Menasha, Appleton and parts of Neenah could have been worse. When the tornado hit Lake Winnebago it moved east slightly. If it had not, it would have hit the lakeshore on the East side of Neenah. That area looks like it had some damage regardless, but it could have been a lot worse.

@heykayadams Menasha, just south east, had an EF-2 most likely EF-3 tornado. My friends house is destroyed. She’s bummed. We saw it from Oshkosh parallel to us when it broke up over Winnebago. Sirens here went off 3 times. Menasha, Neenah and southern Appleton are pretty bad.
@KenTheFoxxo @NWSGreenBay It is so weird the tornado formed in Appleton and then went SOUTH through Menasha and dissipated in Lake Winnebago. That is a very unusual wind direction in North Eastern Wisconsin especially when combined with the crazy ass humidity we have here today.
