There are 40 companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ buried in Northern Cyprus — and their graves were hidden for almost a thousand years.
In the year 648, they arrived in Cyprus to spread the light of Islam. At this site, 40 Sahaba were ambushed in the darkness of night and martyred by Byzantine forces.
And there they remained, hidden from the world.
But when the Ottomans conquered Cyprus in 1571, a shepherd led them to this very field. He had noticed something strange: the grass here grew greener than anywhere else, and his animals refused to graze upon it.
So they began to dig.
What they found had defied time itself.
The martyrs were exactly as they had fallen — their bodies preserved and untouched by time. The Ottomans rebuilt the tombs with honour, and this place became a Sufi lodge.
This is the Kırklar Türbesi — and even today, this land still radiates with their spiritual presence.
Today, stepping into this peaceful place feels like entering a different world. There is a quietness here, a beautiful spiritual presence that is difficult to put into words. Away from the bustle of the airport nearby, the gardens, and the resting place of these martyrs invite you to pause, reflect and remember those who carried the message of Islam across distant lands.

During the Cold War, Switzerland constructed enough reinforced underground nuclear fallout shelters to house 100% of its entire national population! This was a legal requirement enacted in 1963 that led to over 360,000 public and private bunkers being built across the country, many disguised above ground as ordinary wooden chalets or rural barns.
Under the Swiss Federal Act on Civil Protection, every citizen was guaranteed a spot in a hardened shelter in the event of a nuclear, chemical, or biological attack.
To maintain architectural harmony across alpine villages, Swiss engineers pioneered "military camouflage architecture," cladding massive reinforced concrete blast walls with wooden facades, painted windows, and fake roofs to make strategic bunkers invisible to enemy reconnaissance.
The largest of these public structures was the Sonnenberg Tunnel Bunker in Lucerne. Built between 1970 and 1976 inside a seven-story highway tunnel complex, it was engineered to shelter 20,000 people simultaneously. It featured a fully operational subterranean hospital, prison cells, water filtration plants, and its own radio broadcasting studio. Walk with me 👇🏾👇🏾
The Evolution of Modern Bunker Engineering:
How underground fortifications shifted from wartime dugouts to nuclear blast shelters:
1. World War I Dugouts
1914–1918
Military forces shift from surface trenches to deep subterranean dugouts to protect soldiers from heavy industrial artillery shelling.
2. Reinforced Concrete Blockhouses
1939–1945
Wartime nations erect massive concrete Hochbunkers and coastal artillery forts (like the Atlantic Wall) with walls over 10 feet thick.
3. Cold War Nuclear Protection
1950s–1980s
Bunker design evolves to combat radioactive fallout and blast overpressure, incorporating overpressure ventilation, air scrubbers, and blast valves.
4. Luxury Doomsday Compounds
2000s–Present
Former military silos and subterranean quarries are repurposed by private firms into high-tech, self-sustaining survival shelters featuring geothermal power and hydroponics.
More Surprising Facts About Bunkers:
A. Albania's "Bunkerization": Between the 1960s and 1980s, Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha constructed roughly 173,000 concrete dome bunkers across the nation, averaging nearly 15 bunkers per square kilometer, fearing an invasion that never happened.
B. Origin of the Word: The word bunker originally comes from a 18th-century Scots term meaning a "bench" or "coal store," before being adopted by the German military during World War I to describe reinforced underground dugouts.
C. Blast Door Physics: Bunker blast doors are engineered with a wedge-shaped taper so that the shockwave pressure from an external explosion pushes the door tighter into its steel frame, enhancing its air seal against radiation and gas.
SUMMARILY!
Driven by Cold War federal mandates, Switzerland built enough underground bunkers to house 100% of its population, pioneering blast-resistant engineering and clever architectural camouflage.

@MarioNawfal That was an antique tank.
We don't need humans to drive tanks.
This is an uncrewed Ripsaw mini-tank with a huge air-defense turret armed with a 30mm automatic cannon and short-range surface-to-air missiles.
