A strange thing is happening in America - some very smart people are debating whether socialism is the right path forward.

I was born in the Soviet Union and grew up through its disastrous collapse. We had a computer lab in our school when I started first grade in 1989. We went back to oil lamp for 5-6 years before things started improving again.

The US has been the most successful country and an unseen wealth engine - thanks to its emphasis on individual agency, entrepreneurship, free markets and rule of law. It will continue to succeed against all the odds if these fundamental principles are upheld, its success comes from unleashing the power of people.

If you are following the people who have never worked in their life and believe their ideas on fundamentally changing how we live and work - read some history. Many countries experimented with these ivory tower ideas in the previous century - millions of people died and countless lives were wasted.

Maybe we don't need to repeat that!

People are massively underestimating how long it will take AI to trickle down. It takes time to build solutions for specific workflows (that you understand really well), implement them in complex context, most importantly convince people to embrace change and train them. I hear investors saying talk to my hand 🤚 if you are not growing 100x over 2 years. Doubling in 5 years used to be amazing for most investors and here we are.

I often hear people pitying us for being in such a difficult industry. Shipping is a tough, conservative industry - can you really make money there?!

Shipping industry generates $500 billion+ in revenues, if we add fuel, port & terminal dues and services the total industry size is closer to $1 trillion. To put that in perspective - there are only 19 countries in the world with $1 trillion+ GDP.

There is so much to do, we sometimes get too excited to sleep. I tell people, if we do a good job - there are definitely people who can pay us, do not worry 😀

It is really stupid idea to let people who have never built anything, run an enterprise - to make key decisions on how to organize our economy and life. This is plain dangerous - and 20th century has great lessons. Unfortunately ivory tower academics and professional politicians have outsized influence on politics. Good democracy should reflect people and provide effective guardrails against extremists.

@elonmusk should we invest more to understand and promote humanism? Digital super-intelligence cannot be an end goal in itself - unless it promotes human well being. Otherwise horrible things bound to happen @elonmusk - that makes me worried.
