@martinbonnin Now, if its usage is compiled on JDK 9+ with -target 8, the bytecode differs from bytecode within JDK 8, and moreover it will fail at runtime on JDK 8. The new --release argument solves this problem

JDK 9 added an overload for this method changing its return type, so the call resolution depends on the stdlib used for compilation.
