I have not run Sano Paila for over five years. This week I am asking for it anyway.
Almost 20 years ago, a handful of us in our early twenties took a small step to do our bit for our community. We called it Sano Paila. A Little Step, in Nepali. I stepped back five years ago when I entered political life. But you do not stop caring about the thing you built with your own hands, especially not in a week like this one.
Eight days ago, a flood tore through Uttar Gaya in Rasuwa so fast that families had minutes to get out. More than 1,000 people are dead across Nepal. Nearly 3,000 are still missing, around 750 of them from that one municipality. The flood even took the local government office, the one place meant to count the damage.
The organization we built almost 20 years ago is there right now, cooking two hot meals a day for 300 survivors and preparing to build homes for 65 families who have nothing to return to.
Then they found the children.
In Bogatitar, there are children whose parents were taken by the water. Most are still only missing, so there has been no funeral, no answer, nothing to hold on to. They are sleeping wherever there is space, with neighbors who lost their own homes. No adult is responsible for them. And in Nepal, we know what comes next. Within weeks, strangers arrive offering work, a school in the city, a better life. That is how children disappear a second time.
Sano Paila has spent over 19 years pulling children out of trafficking. So the team is opening a safe house in Bogatitar: beds, meals, a counselor, a guard at the door, and someone working every day to find whatever family these children have left.

If you cannot give, a share costs you nothing and might reach someone who can.

Nepal’s new rapper-turned-prime-minister wants to ban unions in the public sector and allow only one union per workplace. Governments cannot dictate who can form unions and who cannot.
Global unions have now issued a statement against it.
Why is Nepal’s new government hastily announcing policies and bans without respecting process, time, empathy, or civic participation? Power without listening only serves your status quo ! I thought we wanted "change" ?. 🤷♀️
