MLP imploded the mainstream right and is no longer confronted with a question that has historically divided the RN - whether or not to align with the centre-right to win power. It is the centre-right that has to support the far-right if it wants to stay alive.

Regardless of the number of seats the RN wins next Sunday, it is clear that Le Pen’s 15-year strategy to ‘normalise’ the party has worked and paid off - in a system designed to keep the extremes out.

Macron’s legacy will be not only the implosion of the French party system, but the collapse of the centre and liberal forces. The door is now open for the far-right and it has been opened by Macron.
