Now that state elections are over, let’s take a look at how state assemblies supervise their allocated budgets and whether these practices ensure accountability and transparency within the state government!

Let's talk about fiscal impact. Did the government really spend RM530 billion during the pandemic?

For the record, budget 2023 clocked in at RM388b, with the largest ever development expenditure of RM97b. So 530b is more than 5x our development expenditure in 1 year.

After all, not everyone opted for the loan moratorium. It was just an estimate, and a deferral which would have to be paid at some point.

State budgets are formulated, approved and passed just like the federal budget. Not all states make budget documents available online. In particular, the Estimates or Anggaran are not available. How can a govt be accountable for its planning, without showing the budget?

Transparency standards for procurement fall far short in Malaysia. Impacted communities know very little about the megaprojects meant to bring development to them.

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a global program that aims to promote infrastructure development and enhance trade connectivity in developing nations. At IDEAS, we are thrilled to be part of this exciting research project and shed light on Malaysia's participation in the BRI. Our focus is on the local communities impacted by BRI-related projects, specifically the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) and the Trans-Sabah Gas Pipeline (TSGP).

We believe that every community plays a crucial role in the success of these federal development projects. IDEAS has engaged with the local communities to understand their perspectives and perceptions of their roles in these projects. The findings are fascinating and provide us with insights to make a few policy recommendations.
