Luego, se descubrió una enorme masa en la boca del feto, que casi la obstruía por completo. Mientras el bebé está en el útero, no hay problema, ya que recibe oxígeno directamente de su madre a través del cordón umbilical. Pero en el momento en que nace e intenta respirar por primera vez, la boca obstruida se lo impide.
El Dr. Kypros Nicolaides, un especialista de renombre mundial en Londres, se enteró del caso y dijo: "Vayan a Israel, al Hospital Rabin". Remitió a la familia al Dr. Yuval Gialchinsky.

Los médicos prepararon un plan para una cirugía compleja y poco común en la que operarían al bebé mientras aún está conectado a su madre a través de la placenta, para que tenga tiempo de respirar con la ayuda de máquinas antes de desconectarlo. Pero justo antes de la cirugía, el Dr. Gialchinsky decidió resolver el problema incluso antes del nacimiento. Mediante ecografía, insertó una aguja muy fina a través del abdomen de la madre directamente en la boca del feto y drenó el líquido que había formado la masa. En cuestión de minutos, la masa desapareció. La boca se abrió. Poco después nació un bebé sano, que respiró por primera vez por sí solo, sin ningún problema.

«En otro lugar, podría haberse ahogado inmediatamente después del nacimiento», concluye el Dr. Gialchinsky. «Aquí logramos prevenir el peligro incluso antes de que respirara».

Dos semanas después, la familia ya había regresado a Chipre con un bebé sano.

I went back to La Guaira yesterday and there was a different kind of sadness. Not the shock and panic of the first few days but almost an emptiness. It felt quieter - buildings and piles of rubble, but abandonded, now without anyone scouring through them.

At other sites there were noisy diggers clearing the dusty concrete and remnants of people's lives - books, clothes, broken furniture. Most of the international rescue teams had gone, much of the press had too.

I spoke to one guy who had written 'We are alive' on the outside of his house to let people know he and his mother were ok if he nipped out anywhere. But speaking to him I found out his two daughters had been killed in Catia la Mar. He was far from ok.

Another guy walked out from a collapsed building that was mostly concrete slabs and told me he was picking up the remains of his brother and nephew. The remains were just bones. The earthquake had started a small fire that burned their bodies.

A nun stood looking at a heap of debris. I wondered what she was thinking, trying to make sense of it all. And probably unable to.
