SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON THE UK PASSPORT INTERVENTION
While every genuine complaint from a Nigerian citizen deserves to be heard, public debate must be based on verifiable facts rather than conclusions that incorrectly attribute every administrative issue within the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) or a Nigerian diplomatic mission personally to the Minister of Interior, Hon Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo @BTOofficial
The facts tell a considerably different story.
1. The Minister Did Not Create the Backlog:
The said intervention is a response to existing operational challenges.
2. The £20 charge did not originate with this intervention:
The Nigeria High Commission's published passport requirements already provide for a £20 administrative charge for standard passport services in the UK;
3. The £150 charge specifically relates to lost, misplaced or damaged passports. It is not a blanket charge for every applicant; and
4. The £70 charge is associated with the special intervention exercise:
If there are questions about why the special intervention carries a £70 administrative charge, that is a legitimate question for the responsible authorities to explain transparently.
But it is intellectually dishonest to translate that question into an allegation that the Minister personally decided to make Nigerians "pay for his failure."
5. Diaspora Passport Fees Were Not Increased:
The 2025 passport fee review did not increase the standard fees for Nigerians in the diaspora.
6. Services Are Being Taken Across the UK:
To make the intervention more accessible geographically, it will happen in London, Manchester, Cardiff and Aberdeen, bringing services closer to Nigerians in different regions.
7. Technical Challenges Are Not Being Ignored:
The NIS has acknowledged challenges with some digital passport processes and has undertaken corrective measures rather than abandoning affected applicants.
The Minister has pursued structural passport reforms, not merely temporary interventions. The broader record is equally important.
The NIS has introduced automation, online application processes, electronic tracking and contactless biometric initiatives as part of the passport reform programme, and has already processed and issued more than 15,000 passports to Nigerians abroad.
8. The NIS Has the Operational Mandate:
Passport issuance is an operational responsibility of the Nigeria Immigration Service, while the Minister @BTOofficial provides ministerial oversight and direction.
10. What Nigerians deserve now is clarification, not misinformation.
The most constructive response at this stage is for the NIS and the Nigeria High Commission to clearly publish
exactly what the £70 intervention charge covers, which categories of applicants must pay it; whether applicants whose cases resulted from an existing NIS backlog can have the charge waived; expected turnaround times for cases handled during the intervention; and a clear complaints/escalation mechanism for applicants.
Those are reasonable demands.
11. Accountability Must Be Based on Facts.
Criticising service failures is legitimate. However, attributing every operational problem to BTO personally while ignoring the intervention he ordered is an incomplete and misleading narrative.
Conclusion:
Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo should be judged on the reforms, interventions and corrective measures undertaken under his leadership, not on a distorted portrayal of an exercise designed to resolve existing passport-service challenges.
Nigerians deserve both efficient service and accurate information.
