First of all, the boysโ image is not controlled by them. That means how they present to the outside world is governed by clauses in their early contracts. They canโt just opt out even though they might wish to. There is significant pressure for them to be seen publicly - hence Harry cycling around on a Lime Bike or walking in the park with the stunt.
They are coerced into believing that a stunt will give them media coverage because the PR managers can then issue info and photos to the Daily Fail etc for print. So they get publicity.
Who the stunt is not their choice. That is arranged by the PR managers between themselves. If a stunt turns out to be problematic, it is extremely unfortunate for them but wonโt end the contract. They have to continue with it until the agreed date of termination.
Being disappointed that a forcibly closeted person is closeted is illogical. They are governed by contracts signed in 2010 - things were different in their home country then - yet each new contract has to honour the ongoing clauses of the previous one. These boys are tied up in a web of contracts so it is very difficult for them to be free from reatriction.
Non-compliance would have significant consequences - holding back music releases, for example (as with Liam) or no radio/online publicity (Louis). It could incur penalties as well - financial or actual.
People are beholden to the industry for decades - Brian Harvey (East 17) owes ยฃ800K to the industry because of exploitation. East 17 was formed in 1991. Salt-n-Pepa were formed in 1985 and are still in dispute with their label about ownership of their work and early contractual obligations. George Michael tried to sue Sony about his 8-album deal and contractual obligations signed as a teenager and lost. They did. It publicise his work and for 5 years no music of his was put out. He said, โSony appears to see artists as little more than software.โ
When the boys left Syco, Cowell bought out Sonyโs share of Syco Music, leaving him with absolute freedom of the TV shows on which he works. For this he agreed to let Sony have the music catalogue of bands like 1D and the others he ran. Syco Music was dissolved once Louis left and absorbed by Sony. So all One Directionโs music and their contractual obligations are now under Sony. This includes their image rights.
Prince tried to gain artistic control and ownership of his masters ending up in a legal battle with Warner Bros. He wrote โslaveโ on his face during public appearances, letting the public know how he felt tied into contract with them. He even dropped his name, using an unpronounceable symbol instead to try and get out of his contract. He was eventually partly successful.
Michael Jackson tried to sue Sony for ownership and autonomy of his work. He claimed they were racist to him and had deliberately sabotaged promotion. This was when Michael owned 50% of Sony Music Publishing. He felt they were trying to push him out completely.
Brian Harvey is too scared to leave the country, suspecting someone would try to end his life if he did. He sold 30 million records yet still owes ยฃ800K.
Salt-n-Pepa have lost their case and are appealing it.
And where are George Michael, Prince and Michael Jackson now? They all died untimely deaths. ๐
Itโs worth knowing what these companies can do and have done in the past before arguing that the boys should be able to have control and being angry with them for their actions. I agree that they SHOULD have control - but the simple answer is that they donโt.
Watch HarryโsโMusic For A Sushi Restaurantโ video again. Through metaphor, he tells us all about the industry.
Guys!!!! The simulation is nearly finished!!!! I was crying. You will be crying. Louis will be crying. Everyone will be crying! It's so perfect, we can't wait for you to see it #MSGforLouis
