ALLATRA Civic Platform New York hosted a community event at Civic Hall on April 23: “Micro- and Nanoplastics: Impact on Animals and Nature.”
📣The event brought together scientists, researchers, and New York City residents for an open discussion on the growing impact of micro- and nanoplastics on living systems. The presentation drew from the documentary Nanoplastics: A Threat to Life and the report Nanoplastics: A Systematic Risk Analysis for Human Health, Ecosystems, and the Environment, released by the ALLATRA Global Research Center.
Speakers examined the effects of micro- and nanoplastics on ocean ecosystems, wildlife, insects, farm animals, and pets, showing how plastic pollution moves through the food chain and interacts with living organisms at the cellular level. The limitations of current solutions, including recycling and ocean cleanup efforts, were also explored.
Oli Kotyk, an ALLATRA speaker, explained how a single gram of plastic can ultimately fragment into quadrillions of nanoplastic particles, and invited an audience member to participate in a live demonstration. Through a series of simple experiments, the audience identified one of plastic’s defining properties: its ability to acquire and retain an electrostatic charge.
📶Dr. Anastasiya Pashigreva, a scientist and representative of the ALLATRA GRC, highlighted how this property may allow plastic particles to penetrate the cells of animals and plants and interfere with the electrical processes that sustain living organisms - from neural signaling to photosynthesis.
She closed with the words: “The animals cannot advocate for themselves. Bees losing their ability to navigate home cannot tell us what is happening to them. The shearwater chick with hundreds of pieces of plastic in its stomach cannot testify before a legislature. But we know. And knowing, we are responsible.”
Stay tuned to ALLATRA New York for more upcoming community events.

ALLATRA partner in Kazakhstan, the Public Association “Center for Climate Research,” took part in the Regional Environmental Summit RES 2026 in Astana
📆From April 22 to 24, 2026, the Regional Environmental Summit (RES 2026) was held in Astana — the largest international platform in Central Asia dedicated to ecology, climate, and sustainable development issues.
The Republican Public Association “Center for Climate Research” (Republic of Kazakhstan, city of Almaty) presented at the Summit scientific materials on the problems of climate change and environmental pollution by nanoplastics, prepared by ALLATRA, and also held a series of meetings with international representatives and government institutions.
☑️Within the framework of the Summit, representatives of the Center discussed issues of international environmental cooperation with the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Kazakhstan, Yasumasa Iijima, the Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Kazakhstan, Aleška Simkić, and the Vice Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Mongolia, Batbayar Munkhtamir.
The main focus was placed on the problem of nanoplastics as one of the most serious and underestimated environmental threats of modern times.
The scientific report “Nanoplastics in the Biosphere: From Molecular Impact to a Planetary Crisis” was handed over to the Minister of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Akmaral Alnazarova.
The scientific data collected in the report indicate that nanoplastic particles are capable of interfering with the fundamental mechanisms of cellular regulation.
The documentary film “Nanoplastics: The Threat to Life,” prepared by the ALLATRA Global Research Center, also attracted interest.
RES 2026 confirmed that modern environmental challenges require the unification of science, the state, and the international community in order to find joint solutions.
