@JesseJenkins@duncancampbell Definitely a first for an IRP in Minnesota. A very cool idea to better integrate DERs into planning and utility operation at (hopefully) competitive cost. New idea that got filed mid-IRP cycle so full proposal coming next fall.
What's going on with rooftop solar? It is in a bad place in the US, with persistent high costs, utility attacks, and a lack of coherent vision. @JesseJenkins recently asked about rooftop costs which got me thinking - we need to radically retool our rooftop solar industry. 🧵
Recently @johnffarrell had a great thread on not needing any new transmission. A lot of folks found it really interesting, so I thought I'd offer a friendly academic rebuttal: YES WE NEED MORE TRANSMISSION (thread)
On Monday, the @MN_PUC received bids for 1,000s of megawatts of clean energy generation competing to provide "firm dispatchable" power to Xcel Energy! We love seeing how much development activity and clean energy innovation there is in the Midwest.
After a few days at NARUC and talking with a number of our state regulators, I've got observations....
First, our regulators are by in large, highly dedicated. Hearings that last 14 hrs, complicated acronyms, difficult decisions. It's hard work that isn't glorious.
@drvolts unless it’s paired with a compelling vision beyond “everyone has rooftop solar. Even public power is not without faults. Anywho, giving Jeff the benefit of the doubt that there’s more nuance behind the strategy
@drvolts Also, there’s opportunity with utilities being closely regulated unlike most corporations. Of course there’s serious issues with that regulation in most places. But organizing “against” utilities the same way as against a coal company misses big opportunities

Lazard's new "firming" in their LCOE is incorrect and a throwback to the early 2000's when everyone thought variable energy meant you had to purchase backup capacity. As an aside, when I was at Black & Veatch we did the underlying analysis for Lazard from 07-10.
