I love you guys & your podcast so much!! It's so relieving to know I'm not alone when it comes to my own experience in the evangelical ⛪️ & that I'm not the only one feeling like I'm being brainwashed to think that if I deviate at all from the path I'm gonna go to hell @ShWives
Today in Greek Exegesis, we looked at the word translated "authority" as in "women cannot hold authority over men. This 1 Timothy passage is the ONLY place it appears in the NT and we had only guesses what it meant until scholars discovered it elsewhere. Ready for the meaning?
i mean, who would’ve guessed a kid who learned to manage the emotions of those around them as a survival skill might,
y’know…
grow into a hyper-vigilant, people-pleasing adult with poor boundaries whose self-worth is based on their ability to make other people happy
Just a reminder...David wasn't described as a "man after God's own heart" when he was a king. It wasn't after he murdered Uriah. It wasn't after he raped Bathsheba. It was when he was a teenager. Before he had power, and it certainly isn't a reflection of who he became.
Powerful & gut-wrenching exhibit @UN. “What were you wearing?”is one of the most common qs victims of sexual assault get asked. Each of the outfits you see in the photos was worn by a survivor at the time of their assault. Its time to shift the blame to where it really belongs
🚩Consider it a serious red flag when a spiritual leader teaches that mental healthcare can be provided by the pastor, and eschews the help of actual professionals!! THIS IS THEOLOGICAL MALPRACTICE!!🚩
Going public with my story of sexual assault was for the sake of others.
But to this day, I wish I wasn’t known for the worst thing that ever happened to me.
Some days I think to myself,
“I shouldn’t have told.”
Can't believe I'm degrading myself by wading into The Modesty Debate.🧵
One thing I learned really quickly as I got older and started meeting people from other countries is that things that seem really obvious to you aren't obvious at all and someone had to teach you the rules.
!!!!! I just finished the book The Great Sex Rescue by @sheilagregoire and I would highly recommend it. It covers things like in this tweet and was so freeing for me when I read it.
I was just talking with my son about the recent Twitter threads on modesty & also about our high-controlling church that had strict modesty rules. He's in his 30s and agreed that all it did for him was train him to look at womens' body parts instead of the person (back then).
John cooper telling people who are deconstructing to shutup while refusing to engage anyone from those circles (so far) is the PERFECT analogy for why so many of us are leaving the spaces he occupies.
This is so important. I've been starting to realize just how much weight the church puts on women to dress modestly, for wives to not "deprive" their husbands of sex, and doesn't put some of that responsibility back on the man. Teach men to view women as people and not objects!
I've shared a lot about my ex. One thing I didn't ever have to worry about was him telling me how to dress or about covering up when nursing our 7 babies, even in public or in church. We also ignored our pastor who said no co-ed swimming or showing shoulders/knees. Whew!
PREACH. I work in healthcare. 5 days a week I'm gone from home for 10-11 hrs. I study the word on my own time but I also have to take care of my mental health & my physical health. Community is also important. It's a lot to keep together in 7 days.& I dont have a fam to care for.
