@BridgetBearden I also referenced Kamenetz! I thought his point about data-driven classrooms and the impact on students' feelings of belonging was so good! It reminded me a lot of what Turtle discussed in her TEDtalk. "Sense of belonging is key to academic motivation" #ed109
@LBrunner28 It's so important to remember that while the students may be able to speak English, at home the parents may not. Some families may not even have access to technology. We must make sure that we aren't letting the technology consume us & be mindful of the needs of families. #ed109
@marymcdonald37 Makes me wonder...what changed? Is it that we want sympathy from people and the only way we can think to receive it is through online "friends"? Maybe we post the private details of our lives to make us feel like we aren't alone, like one of the other articles discussed? #ed109
@marymcdonald37 "One of the most obvious, he says, is the shift in how we view privacy." I found this to be so true! Gone are the days where we keep our "private" lives private. I've learned so many things about people through the internet that I would have been better off not knowing. #ed109
@LBrunner28 I love the part in the article where it talks about how we are technologically obese. We don't consume food all day but we can't stay away from our phones. We are addicted to the consumption of technology. Too bad it won't make us sick if we consume too much like food does #ed109
When we become more concerned with looks or having the latest fad, we lose sight of what really matters. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so what picture are we painting? #ed109
https://t.co/rE6Yg74wpQ "Those who used social media (Facebook and Instagram were the most frequently used) more often reported being more concerned with things like their appearance or having fun rather than helping others or being honest." #ed109
We tend to think that everyone has it better, when in reality they may be in the same boat as us. We are quick to want what everyone else has (looks, materialistic items, etc.) and we don't always see the truth behind the picture or post. #ed109
This is so true! I find myself googling topics all the time and I get so distracted by the vastness of the Internet that I rarely spend time on only one topic. For example, I tend to follow the 'rabbit trails' of Facebook or youtube videos. #ed109#NOT
I have been reading What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr. He states, "when we go online, we enter an environment that promotes cursory reading, hurried and distracted thinking, and superficial learning."(Carr, pg. 116). #NOT#ed109
@WattersLesli What's an encyclopedia?...just kidding! I can't remember the last time I actually opened one though... Information is so much more readily accessible with technology. #ed109#NOT
Being on a computer constantly also causes me to not want to think about things. For example, if someone asks me a question at work, I am more tempted to google the answer instead of being confident and using my own knowledge. Even when I may know the answer. #NOT#ed109
@jerridkruse I don't know that behavior will actually change. I'm one who believes that technology can become an addiction. The more we continue to advance & utilize technology, the more the behavior will increase & continue. I feel it would take a lot to train our brains to function without.
@LBrunner28 It can also have a negative effect if you don't 'friend' that person for some reason or another and you run into them out in public. This can create an awkward situation for both parties. #NOT#ed109
I am always on my computer at work and at home. I have noticed more recently that being on my computer all the time is having a negative impact on physical health. Staring at the screen all day, every day strains my eyesight and causes some pain. #ed109#NOT
