When countries retaliate with tariffs of their own, what will happen to US exports? They will fall. So, net net, what will be the benefit to the US economy and trade deficit. Economy contracts, trade deficit might or might not change, prices will increase. Stagflation at best.

When tariffs went into effect on Canadian steel, what do you suppose American steel companies did? They raised prices! Why not? New level set by the president. Investing in a new plant would cost several billion dollars. What do you suppose the ROI on that looks like?

If you were Putin, your wish list would be: destroy alliances, break down institutions, create a depression, weaken the military, bankrupt the treasury, eliminate research for medicine, technology, education, and more. Create divisions within American society. Abandon Ukraine.
