Our proverbial door is always left open for the ex-orphans to come visit. After eight months away, Chemi Chemi just sauntered in!

We rescued Chemi Chemi in June 2009 from Loisaba Conservancy – a young bull, eight months old, in desperate need of food and company. Brought to Nairobi where we gave him one-to-one care from our Keepers and the comfort and company of a new herd, he recovered. When he outgrew the Nursery, he graduated to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit alongside his bull friends – and the rest, as they say, is history.

Nineteen years on from his rescue, Chemi Chemi is wild. Those friendships from his Nursery days and the bonds forged with his Keepers are still going strong – he still drops by our Ithumba Unit every few months.

Entre el polvo, el silencio y la desesperación, una pequeña vida se aferraba a la esperanza.

Mientras los rescatistas buscaban sobrevivientes entre los escombros de un edificio colapsado en Venezuela, encontraron a un perrito atrapado. No ladraba, no lloraba, no tenía fuerzas para pedir ayuda. Pero cuando le acercaron agua, sus ojos brillaron de una manera imposible de olvidar, como si entendiera que alguien por fin había llegado por él.

Fue rescatado con vida y hoy se ha convertido en un símbolo de algo que nunca debemos olvidar: en medio de las tragedias más dolorosas, cada vida cuenta. Porque el sufrimiento no distingue especies, y la compasión sigue siendo una de las formas más hermosas de humanidad.

For days, this Elephant mother carried her stillborn calf across the harsh landscapes of Damaraland in Namibia. Touching, smelling and refusing to let go.

Few images resonated with audiences this year as powerfully as this one. The photograph captures a behaviour that has fascinated and moved observers for decades: an Elephant mother’s prolonged attachment to her dead calf. The composition is simple, but it is the emotional weight of the moment that gives the image its power. It is a difficult scene to witness and a poignant reminder of the complexity of Elephant behaviour.
