The sigmoid function has an interesting property that if z is positive, the exp(-z) is very small and g(x) is close to 1.
When z is negative, exp(-z) becomes big and g(x) tends towards zero. The model has a decision boundary above which it predicts 1 and 0 below it.

The logistics regression is a special case where the sigmoid function is applied to the linear equation (z) from linear regression.
g(x) = 1/(1+exp(-z))
z = wx + b
