Led by my awesome mentor @c_terrer, our new research is now published in @Nature!
And yes, soil + plants absorb and store CO2. But when levels of CO2 are high, we found soil:plant response to be contrary as regulated by soil microbes.

In our new @nature paper we show that soils or plants will absorb more CO2 as carbon levels rise – but not both https://t.co/vyGCzSfznK

The thing about the G7 is that they are basically a mafia of imperialist powers who dominate global arms sales, habitually coup progressive govts in the South, prop up right-wing dictatorships, and are responsible for 77% of excess emissions. It doesn't exactly inspire trust.
Finally we point out that CO2 is now higher than any time in the last 3 million years. If the climate system is allowed to catch up to this CO2 level we are headed back to the Pliocene, a time with beech trees on the Antarctic Peninsula and around 20 m higher sea level
I'm seeing a lot of people FOMO quit their jobs to join "crypto", probably out of some over-romanticized view of what goes on in these projects. Let me illuminate you about what actually happens:

Energy demand for critical minerals set to soar as the world pursues net zero goals.
Our new report shows that the energy sector’s overall needs for minerals could grow by as much as 6️⃣ times by 2040, depending on the pace of efforts to cut emissions: https://t.co/eWU01h9okw
@ClimateOpp@katydaigle@motamman@ReutersScience@AndriaSciComm@4C_H2020 The is some greenness in recovery plans but many are same old brown economy largely for now ☹️. Long way to go. The important thing is they can be green, and they will make a difference. Still some greenness is good. Denmark is ahead

It's hard to anticipate the impact of papers in journals like this, so I didn't pay too much attention to the media. Thanks @Ana__Bastos and @SteniBocker for pointing a couple of examples. I didn't worry at first, but man, there are some really bad reporters out there!
But there is a silver lining: large increases in soil C stocks without large increases in biomass may be possible – through enhanced allocation of C belowground. This could lead to higher-than-expected increases in soil C stocks!
