St. Thomas, the “Railway City”, was the rail capital of Canada in the early 19th century because it was a key rail corridor for transporting goods to and from the United States, serving as a primary stop on the Canadian side.
In 1918 the Spanish Flu’s origins were unknown.Some Allies speculated that the pandemic was a biological weapon developed in Germany & secretly planted in Bayer aspirin produced in the United States under a German-held patent.

#DidYouKnow that on this Day in 1918: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, author of the famous war poem "In Flanders Fields", died of pneumonia at age 45.
His legacy is peppered across #Ontario, including a provincial plaque in his hometown #Guelph.

School Fairs, held at the many one-room schools across the county, were also well-attended.
