No rookie is making a bigger defensive impact through the first two weeks of the season than Seattle Storm guard Flau’jae Johnson.
She’s the only rookie to rank in the top five in both steals and blocks, sitting fifth in steals (1.2) and first in blocks (1.7). Her combined (2.9) stocks (steals+blocks) per game leads all rookies.
The steals may have been expected, but the shot-blocking is what really stands out. At 5’11, Johnson has shown impressive versatility in how she gets her blocks. She’s picked off shots on the perimeter, but has also made her presence felt as a help-side defender, blocking bigger forwards like 6’4 Monique Billings, 6’3 Aaliyah Edwards, and 6’4 Nyara Sabally.
If you watched Johnson’s sophomore and junior NCAA Tournament runs at LSU, though, this defensive activity shouldn’t come as a surprise.
And she’s doing all of this while averaging (11.8) points and (5.0) rebounds per game. While her shooting percentages were slow to start the season, her latest performance may be a sign she’s turning the corner after dropping 17 points on 58.3% shooting.
Can Johnson sustain this level of defensive intensity? We may get another clue tomorrow when the Storm take on the Washington Mystics. 🪄
Mayor @ZohranKMamdani: Ronald Reagan famously said, 'the 9 most terrifying words in the English language are "I'm from the government, and I'm here to help."' I disagree. 9 more terrifying words are actually "I worked all day, and can't feed my family." We are going to use the power of government to lower prices and make it easier for New Yorkers to put food on the table.
Zohran Mamdani has turned blocks in front of 50 NYC public schools into car-free ‘Soccer Streets’ where children can play in celebration of the upcoming World Cup.
